Michigan Heart & Vascular Specialists recently welcomed Chris W. Akins, MD, and J.D. Talbott, DO, to the staff. Together, Dr. Akins and Dr. Talbott have 33 years of cardiovascular and thoracic surgical experience and have performed over 6,000 procedures. Their professional credentials and surgical experience complement the expertise of the physicians and specialists on the staff of Michigan Heart & Vascular Specialists.

Chris W. Akins, MD
Board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Chris W. Akins, MD, received his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, where he also completed a Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship.

Dr. Akins was the Director of Robotic Surgery at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, and Medical Director of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery at Aventura Medical Center in Aventura, Florida. Other health systems with which he has been affiliated include Baptist Hospital of Miami and South Miami Hospital.

J.D. Talbott, DO
Board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery, J.D. Talbott, DO, received his medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Prior to joining Northern Michigan Regional Health System, he served as both Chief of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery and Associate Medical Director of Cardiovascular Surgery at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. Additionally, he served as Division Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery for the Michigan State University Department of Osteopathic Surgical Specialties.

In 1990, Dr. Talbott founded the Lansing Heart & Lung Specialists, PC, where he served eight years as president, and co-founded the Cardiothoracic Surgical Program at Sparrow Hospital.
