Duane W. Schuil, MD, PhD

Duane W. Schuil, MD, Ph.D., FACC, FSCAI, has been a practicing cardiologist in Petoskey since 1989. Dr. Schuil is the President of Michigan Heart & Vascular Specialists and has held a number of professional leadership positions including Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine, NMH (1991); Chief, Division of Medicine, NMH (1992-94); and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, NMH (2000-present). Dr. Schuil also served as chairman of the Institutional Review Board of Northern Michigan Hospital, overseeing all research at the institution, from 1990 until 1995 (member through 2001). Currently, Dr. Schuil serves as the co-chair of the Interdisciplinary Endovascular Department at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital. Dr. Schuil graduated from Calvin College in 1976. He attended the Medical University of South Carolina and graduated in 1983 with two degrees: an MD and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology. He completed his residency and fellowship in cardiology at UCLA-San Fernando Valley Medical Program in 1989. Dr. Schuil is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease, with special certification in Interventional Cardiology, by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Schuil has maintained a special interest in catheter-based treatment of multivessel coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction management, and management of cardiogenic shock. Dr. Schuil’s original research interest culminated in a doctorate in pharmacology, with a special emphasis on myocardial cell membrane and its transport properties. Dr. Schuil’s current research interests include transcatheter cardiac interventional device development. In addition, Dr. Schuil’s practice has expanded into peripheral vascular disease diagnosis and management, including various catheter based interventional strategies.
